Who We
Are
Society for the
History of Czechoslovak Jews was established in the early 1960s in New York as the successor
to the inter world war Society for the
History of Jews in the Czechoslovak Republic (Společnost pro dějiny židů
v Československé republice) founded
by members of B'nai B'rith. Its founding
members included luminaries of history, sociology and other disciplines. The
Society's three volumes of The Jews of
Czechoslovakia published in the 1970s and early 1980's remain indispensable
to students of European history and lovers of Czechoslovak Jewish
heritage.
In recent years the focus of the Society has been annual
Holocaust commemorations as well as smaller initiatives pertaining to Jewish
heritage in the Czech and Slovak republics. In 2011 we initiated a series of lectures on topics related to the history and culture of Jews in the two countries.
This year's series, entitled From Democracy to Dictatorship and
Genocide: Jews in the Czech Lands and
Slovakia before and during the Second World War, is comprised of two lectures, in April and May 2013.
